My Healthy Version of Cabbage Rolls With Tomato Sauce

Ever since I tried frozen microwavable cabbage rolls with tomato sauce, I was hooked! The only problem it was super expensive. Try $7 or so for 2 stupid little cabbage rolls! So, I just made my first batch of cabbage rolls with tomato sauce from scratch, only I decided to use marinara on top. What are cabbage rolls with tomato sauce? Exactly what it sounds like. Basically stuffed cabbage rolls with tomato sauce or tomato soup on top. You can basically stuff it with anything you want, that’s what I did anyway.

My healthy version of cabbage rolls with tomato sauce:

  • 99% fat-free ultra lean ground turkey
  • 3 stems of celery
  • ½ cup of shredded carrots
  • ½ onion
  • 2 large tomatoes
  • 1 egg
  • 1 full jar of marinara sauce

Blend the celery, carrots, onions, tomatoes, and egg (I love my nifty Ninja blender.) You can also dice the veggies, too. Then mix it all together with the ground turkey.

Now, the tricky thing is getting the cabbage leaves to come apart without ripping. You’re supposed to take the core off the bottom of the cabbage head. Drop the cabbage head in large pot with enough boiling water. Let it boil until the leaves are soft enough to come off. But, make sure you run the cabbage under cold water before you start taking the leaves off the cabbage head. I say this because I didn’t do this and I burned my fingers trying to do it the hard way.

Then, you take the individual leaves and start rolling. It’s not that easy, honestly, but it’s also not as hard as it sounds.

Seasoning Your Stuffing

On a side note, I didn’t add lemon juice or rice to my personal cabbage rolls with tomato sauce. You’re also supposed to have both, but I didn’t use either. Oh, and for seasoning I chose Braggs Liquid Aminos and Accent. I added a couple of packs of Stevia instead of brown sugar (most recipes call for brown sugar). The lemon juice, tomato sauce, and brown sugar are supposed to give it a sweet/sour taste. I didn’t use the lemon juice but will next time.

That’s about it. I didn’t use salt because Braggs Liquid Aminos has plenty of sodium. Well, that’s how I made my healthy cabbage roll.

Warning: cabbage contains lots of fiber, proceed with caution! ha ha!
